Five Traditional Christmas Celebration Ideas For 2020
This is arguably the most wonderful time of the year for me! I love Christmas, always have and always will, and here are my five traditional Christmas celebration ideas for 2020.
Most of these ideas are really nothing new. What will matter this time, is how intentional and present we will be in celebrating Christmas 2020.
My personal opinion about this season is that much of its true meaning has been lost to over commercialisation.
My Traditional Christmas
Christmas as far as I know, is simply about God sending His Son, Jesus Christ, to redeem mankind.
This in itself calls for joy and celebration. After all, when the angel announced the birth of the saviour to the shepherds that night, he said to them, “ fear not, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy to all people.”
I view traditional Christmas celebrations in light of the message of salvation, the carols, the decorations, the presents, the food, the family reunions, and Santa for the kids.
What makes it all the more awesome, is that the season allows us to wind down the year with love, hope, sharing, caring, giving, and with a bang!
Christmas Can Be Lonely Too!
On the flip side of things, Christmas could be a very difficult period for many.
Having lost my adopted son (who would have been 22, this October to cancer), a sister, and my parents, I can tell you that the celebration has a way of evoking sadness.
My late dad’s birthday is a few days before Christmas. I still miss him sore, despite the fact that he’s been dead for almost 20 years.
The festivities tend to amplify and spotlight our loneliness and the losses we have experienced over the years.
Amidst the laughter and cheer, is a longing and desire that they were still here.
All we can do sometimes, is to hold on to the beautiful memories we shared.
I pray that these memories fuel us from within, so that we will be able pull through this season.
More importantly, that we too, will create memories that’ll light up the world for others to hold on to.
2020, A Peculiar Year!
This year has been like no other.
A pandemic! deaths! job losses! social distancing, lockdowns, and the fear of a global recession, which has necessitated the call to support local businesses in order to keep things afloat.
It will be in the midst of these that we’d have to celebrate Christmas 2020. What a peculiar year, this is!
A Time For Hope
Christmas 2020 should be about keeping hope alive, and making the best of what we have, to create lasting memories.
More than the presents and dinners, it will have to be about making connections, and finding joy in the simple things.

I’m sure that by now, you will be hearing songs about Christmas and Christmas number ones, blasting through the airwaves and shops.

Send Christmas Cards With A Cause
At the thick of the lockdown over the summer, one of my daughters and her group of friends thought that sending handwritten letters to each other was a good way to stay connected.
I was petrified by the idea, I almost passed out from fear!
And then…she and her brother decided that buying things online would be their new favourite pastime.
I can’t tell you how frightened I was.
They continued to purchase things online until they went back to college.
What we did was to wipe down the parcels with bleach as they came and thankfully, none of us fell ill.
This was what gave me the courage to start out this website.
I said all of these to say that, sending out Christmas cards is an important aspect of the Christmas tradition.
I think it’s a heartfelt way to show that you care.
The postal services haven’t stopped working since the pandemic started. I still receive letters in my post, and the occasional orders made by the children.
If you receive any cards or parcels, ensure to follow the Covid -19 guidelines – to wipe the products with bleach or detergent, wash your hands and don’t touch your mouth, eye, and nose.

Creating Experiences
Christmas 2020 is about finding joy and great pleasure in the ordinary, although I’ll be the first to say it’s a hard one.
We have been locked up and housebound for so long, struggling to make sense of all that has happened.
You can’t get to see your parents; your children can’t see their grandparents.
Parenting during this pandemic has been tough!
Waking up and doing the same thing day in day out can be both mentally and psychologically daunting, not to add the financial constraints and frequent job losses!
You know what? You are still here. Besides, it could have been worse.
So, relax and enjoy the season with your family.

We all will agree that 2020 has been a year like no other. We lost scores of friends and family members along the way.
Some of us lost our livelihoods as well.
This Christmas, as you extend goodwill to others, be kind to yourself, you have done will.
You made it to end and it counts!
